Ian Maxted, of The SoundBox (established in 1980), erstwhile casual purveyor of weird and wonderful retro technology, welcomes you to browse this modest sample of his extensive
range of wind-up gramophones, phonographs, needle tins, novelty records, vintage wireless, valve audio, early microphones, nineteenth century sewing machines, early typewriters,
telephones, and telegraphic items, early cine and Leica cameras, along with vintage autojumble items such as car mascots, P100 headlights, motoring artwork, Bugatti and Rolls-Royce ephemera and parts.
All items offered are genuine originals, and where subject to repair, repaint, or replacement parts, this is clearly stated
in the descriptions. To ensure satisfaction, the gramophones carry a one year guarantee against spring failure. In addition, there is a prompt spares and in-house repair facility.
New gramophone needles always in stock in soft (quiet), and medium (normal) tones @ £3 per packet of 100. I do not recommend loud tone
needles for danger of damage to records. If you feel you need them, I would prefer to overhaul your soundbox to give a louder volume, £5 - £15 average cost plus p&p.
Thin needles flex more, reducing the mechanical energy to the diaphragm, and consequently lower the volume, the thicker they
get, the louder the volume. The needles were always recommended for one play only. This is because abrasive dust was pressed into the surface of the 78s in order to cut the needle to fit
the particular groove profile. Profiles differ in pitch, so a worn needle can quickly ruin your favourite records.
I welcome commission sales, and am also keen to buy your duplicate or surplus items, similar to my stock.
